The Rose of Camelot by James Philip Cox is a wonderful new telling of the legends of King Arthur. When the kings and their armies rebel against King Arthur, the farmers and their families suffer. This leaves Rose, a young woman who desires to become a knight, without a family but with a heart full of vengeance. Desperate for revenge, Rose decides to confront the beast who killed her father but ends up, instead, learning the arts of war from a woman who has made it her life to train knights. After grueling battle training, Rose sets out to avenge her family, but her path leads her on a grand adventure, worthy of a knight of King Arthur.
James Philip Cox weaves together timeless characters with characters of his own invention to create a story that is captivating. The characters in The Rose of Camelot come alive, and the descriptions were so well written that I could easily see and feel what was happening to the characters. Rose is a young woman whose heartbreak and compassion made me instantly care about her. Merlin was a fun character, and I enjoyed his sense of humor. All of the characters had distinct personalities, which made them seem like real people. The storyline had the basics of many King Arthur stories, but it was a fresh view of the stories, especially since the main character was one that the author created. I highly recommend this book, especially to people who love King Arthur stories. I will definitely be looking out for the next book.
