In The Scarlett Quest by Margaret Pearce, John Scarlett was just an ordinary teacher, or tutor, and he was tired of being just ordinary. He believed in alternate universes and he had been experimenting with his theories, sending his cat, Quill, through a portal with a resonator to bring him back. Only when Quill returned, he took one look at John and jumped back through the portal. Now it's John's turn and he's really in for the adventure of his life. Stocked with food supplies and survival gear as well as weapons and, of course, the resonator to ensure his ability to return to his world, John takes the plunge, quite literally.
The new world is not at all what he expected, but, as he encounters one adventure after another and learns the difficulties of living in this alternate universe where everything and everyone seems contrary to his own universe, John discovers a world in which he might want to stay. With his newly adopted name, Lytehead, he adopts a new persona and thrives in his new life of adventure. It's really quite different from his universe, the one where he spent so much time indoors, teaching and marking papers. This life is much more exciting. So, why return? Why not stay?
Margaret Pearce has written a lively and exciting story for young readers. It is an interesting adventure in an alternate universe, but sometimes it becomes a little confusing as everything is so contrary, so opposite, so different from the protagonist's home universe. The story develops nicely with lots of exciting events to keep the young reader glued to the story. A good read.
