Marlena Frank introduces a touch of fantasy in The Sea Witch Follows. We meet Finn from Leekston, located right on the Atlantic Ocean. It’s summer vacation, and Finn is crabbing with his father aboard the boat. This is what Finn truly loves—the peaceful rhythm of the waves and the hard work of an honest day’s catch. Next year, Finn will be a senior, and who knows when he’ll get another chance to go out to sea with his dad. When a storm shifts course and capsizes the boat, Finn ends up stranded on a small island with a lighthouse. There, he meets Ash, and it doesn’t take long for them to fall in love. But a seaweed monster is after Ash, and Finn will do whatever it takes to keep her safe.
Author Marlena Frank has combined her love for the ocean and the mystery of lighthouses into an incredible story full of intrigue. Sensory experiences are rich—from the vibrant sunsets to the salty taste of the ocean air, leaving every reader captivated. The pacing is steady, with enough action to entertain any teenage and young adult reader. Character descriptions are vivid and include unique mannerisms, making them more likable and relatable. The dialogue is well-crafted and effectively propels the plot forward. I loved the youthful innocence of the main characters and the fact that their relationship drives the story. The Sea Witch Follows is the second book in the Monstrous Creatures series, which focuses on events in the small town of Leekston.
