The Sex-Wise Parent by Janet Rosenzweig begins with a difficult truth about raising children: the adults they trust most may be the very people who feel least prepared to speak to them about sex. The author examines how generations of restricted sex education have left parents uncertain about the information their children need, even as youngsters encounter sexual messages in everyday life. She brings the responsibility back into the family, where a child’s earliest questions can become the beginning of a continuing conversation. As that child grows up, the dangers become harder to recognize, particularly when inappropriate behavior comes from someone the family already knows and respects. The author follows how children’s understanding develops and explains why being able to describe an uncomfortable experience to a parent may be essential to their safety.

Janet Rosenzweig’s The Sex-Wise Parent is a fantastic parenting guide and a useful resource for families. The writing is direct and reassuring, and I love how the author gives parents advice they can put into practice at home. Her questions about family expectations are a perfect example, particularly the suggestion that a child who feels uncomfortable kissing a relative can politely offer a handshake. I also liked her ABC approach to the media, which encourages parents to access what their children watch, be there to observe, and communicate about what they see. It’s clear that decades of experience and research have gone into this book, and the author makes that knowledge accessible to every parent. Well written and full of usable guidance, parents who want to talk confidently with their children will appreciate this.
