I heard a lot about this novel called The Shack by William Paul Young several years ago but had not read it. I came across an audio copy and listened to it this weekend. The story starts out well with a mysterious note in the mailbox. Then there is a flashback to a tragic camping trip where Mac’s daughter disappears and is believed dead when her bloody dress is found in a cabin. The heartbreak is reawakened when he receives a note inviting him to return to the cabin! There he meets 3 individuals who claim to be as one. In fact, they claim to be the three members of the Holy Trinity of God! Stereotypes and traditional beliefs are shattered as the conversation and interaction develops. Mac’s grief is at least interrupted as he and the God-beings discuss concepts and ideas, and they attempt to answer his questions to the limits of his understanding. They even share meals together as they talk.

This novel is quite controversial for several reasons as you will see, but it will make you think. If you have a belief in God and what he or she looks like or is, The Shack will challenge it, confirm it, or make you angry, but it’s impossible for it not to affect you. William Paul Young has created a unique way to share the Good News about God and it’s my hope and prayer that many have and will come to know Him through The Shack.
