"That’s the cruelest trick the system plays: it teaches you that truth alone can win. Then it buries you with the paperwork.” But if the paperwork isn't enough to bury you, Owen Parr's novel The Shadow Ledger (A Jack Ryder Thriller) shows just how deep the rabbit hole goes. The story kicks off with a shadowy tip that propels Jack Ryder into a labyrinth of corporate deceit. With Dakota, a brilliant hacker, and Robert, a hardened ex-cop, Jack investigates a company with ties to a powerful drug cartel. Jack and his crew dig deeper, only to discover that the cartel is merely a pawn, manipulated by an even darker and more ruthless force. As adversaries topple only to be replaced by more formidable threats, one truth emerges: When big money is involved, lives become meaningless.
Engaging from the first page, The Shadow Ledger by Owen Parr is an excellent example of what a contemporary conspiracy thriller entails. The labyrinthine plot focuses on corporate chicanery before escalating into an even greater puzzle with ever-increasing risks, and goes a long way to establishing a tension-filled narrative. Character development, particularly the trio of protagonists, is both diverse and top-notch, possibly outshining even the plot as the novel's strength. Equally important is the thematic depth, which shines a light on corporate greed and the lies some people tell themselves when they become villains while still wearing a cloak of righteousness. Fast-paced with plenty of action, The Shadow Ledger is a perfect read for tech-savvy fans of the genre.
