The Shaker of Worlds is a dystopian fantasy written by Karl A.D. Brown. There's a special area near Kirkwood, New York, that was once sacred to ancient tribes and has since been the site of much violence and death. In modern times, it is the home of The Gray Department, an ultra-secret government installation which has existed since the Cold War. Inspired by the success the Russians had with extrasensory perception, the government set up a program that tracked families with proven ESP skills, and sought to encourage cross-breeding to produce stronger telepaths. Maggie and Matthew Stewart and their two children, John and Rachael, are being brought in for observation and testing. Both parents have experienced the testing that goes on in Gray Department buildings and are determined to keep their children out of the hands of this government program.
Karl A.D. Brown's fantasy, The Shaker of Worlds, is a fast-paced action and adventure thriller. Brown's characters are well-developed. I particularly enjoyed the interaction of the ranger, Oliver, and his friend, and the parts of the story that take place in Purgatory. Dystopian fans will enjoy the truly evil government agents who are quite ruthless in their treatment of the telepaths in their care, and any citizens who are determined to expose the Department and its crimes. Young and/or sensitive readers should be prepared for a lot of graphic violence. Although said violence detracted from my enjoyment of The Shaker of Worlds, others may find it lends a frisson to the story.
