The Sky Is Different Here by Shivani Malik is a must-read. Shani is ready to start her PhD program in biochemistry and molecular biology at Southern Illinois University. Her parents, especially her mother, wholeheartedly support her in achieving her dream of building a fully independent and purposeful life and do not expect her to marry young, as is the case for many Indian women. However, Shani soon finds out that having a difficult mentor and adapting to a complex academic world, which proves to be a hostile environment, leaves her with no other choice but to complete her degree as quickly as possible. While working diligently through all the struggles to achieve an independent life of scientific pursuit and establish a stable life in the US, Shani must endure the loss of the person who believed in her the most. This causes her to question her purpose and fuels her desire to gain a sense of belonging in a foreign country.
The Sky Is Different Here by Shivani Malik is an impressive, sweeping, and inspiring debut novel that resonates deeply on multiple levels. It's an essential addition to the women's and immigrant fiction genres, as it explores themes of identity, purpose, resilience, adaptability, belonging, loneliness, and family. This exceptionally well-written book reminds women of all ages never to let stereotypical comments and societal expectations dictate their future and to trust that things will fall into place if they stay committed. I wholeheartedly recommend this book about a talented, hardworking, and smart woman. It skillfully captures an admirable mother-daughter relationship that deeply touched me, as well as the challenges of academic life, immigration, and loss.
