The Southern Belle Breakfast Club by Phyllis F. McManus is a heartbreaking book about friendship. The story is about six women who have been friends for thirty years. They stick together and help each other get through some of life’s biggest problems. I really enjoyed The Southern Belle Breakfast Club. The story reminded me a little of the movie Steel Magnolias. All six women in this story are the best of friends, yet each one has her own unique personality. I saw something of myself in each of them. I connected with Hannah because she never knew her father, but with the help of her friends she was able to meet him. Sadie was the secret keeper and the one that everyone depended on. Gracie was secretive, but got things done. JoBeth had issues, but was trying to overcome them. Tilly had a sarcastic attitude that I loved and the ability to tell it how it is. Stella was a flirt and reminded me of Blanche from The Golden Girls. I liked all the characters and the book made me wish I had friends like these in my life.
In the story, McManus included a little of everything. There were affairs, mystery and secrets. All my favorite things in a story! I do wish that how the women all met was touched on a little more. Perhaps (crossing fingers) there will be a book that gives more detail on how they meet. There was one part in the book that really made me think. It was when the question asked was: “If God doesn’t answer your prayer the way you would like, what does one do then?” The answer given was: “We pray that He will give us strength to face the path He has planned for us.” I really needed to read these words at the time! Overall, I am glad I read this book. I was sad that it ended, and I even shed a tear or two. I hope to read more of McManus’ work in the future.
