Reading aloud to preschoolers not only helps them develop essential reading skills but also helps them love to read. I cannot think of a better way to encourage reading aloud than with rhyming picture books like Captain Troublemaker and The Belly Rub Avenger. In it, Stacey Roberts uses her experience as a prolific children’s book author and grandmother to create characters and verses that are sure to charm readers both young and young at heart. Captain Troublemaker, a naughty yellow lab pup, and The Belly Rub Avenger, a sleepy schnauzer, join forces to answer any call for assistance in their neighborhood. These superhero dogs also have a mystery to solve: Who exactly is asking for help? Is it the ducks? The bunnies? The squirrels? Or is it a little boy or a mama cat who needs the aid of our flying heroes?

As a former educator, what I appreciated the most about Captain Troublemaker and The Belly Rub Avenger is the many subtle lessons it gives its readers – lessons like helping others, protecting the vulnerable, and building a sense of community where differences are welcomed rather than feared. Even so, Stacey Roberts knows that her readers may have a low tolerance for lectures and that silliness is preferred. There is plenty of silliness in this little book. The illustrations will appeal to the preschooler with bold colors and cute images hidden amongst the rhymes that should make them giggle with each turn of the page. I wholeheartedly recommend this appealing picture book.
