The Dragon of Evermore by Cheryl Rush Cowperthwait is the seventh book in The Spires of Dasny series. Grifton and Elky reunite, discovering Hu'gan's abduction. Tucker, a knight, and Dragonbird join the fight. Seyra and Dreyth propose a stealth mission to rescue Hu'gan, and they embark on a journey to infiltrate Kraken Purge. The immortal dragon, Zelspar, has a vision of Flower Bird. Elky's group escapes pursuit and plans to rescue captive Golden dragons. After the victory, the focus shifts to a mission proposed by Zelspar to change attitudes toward dragons in different kingdoms. Zelspar's mission involves sending emissaries to educate and seek alliances, but the sudden collapse of a critical body while using power to safeguard the Spires throws any dream of a promising aftermath into peril.
Cheryl Rush Cowperthwait has done a fantastic job throughout The Spires of Dasny series and shows her ability to go from strength to strength in the running storyline. I think what makes the books particularly good is that there is an intersection between the fantasy and themes that resonate with reality. Justice, revenge, loyalty, and the consequences of war, as well as the individual, internal battles with morality and the impact of action, contribute to a thoughtful exploration of these themes. Hu'gan's desire for justice and Elky's mulling over the cold-heartedness of the world are perfect examples. There are also some incredible twists, like surprise interventions and not-so-minor revelations about Tucker. The writing is clean, descriptive, and fully immersive, and this seventh installment is all I had hoped for and more. Very highly recommended.
