The Stories They Hear shares the incredible influence of Dr. William Keyes IV in mentoring the "Talented Tenth," shaping the future of academically adept African American men through the Institute for Responsible Citizenship. With a wealth of experience, Dr. Keyes speaks on overcoming health battles and personally funding the Institute in a financial crisis. He talks about low expectations placed on Black men and leans into proactive recruitment and positive representation, formed with character, integrity, faith, and self-governance. In Dr. Keyes extending his success to others, he expects the same to create a legacy of service. Through stories of genuine resilience, like those of his own children and former students like Barrett Young, he shows readers how the model of firm guidance and moral excellence leads to success. Dr. Keyes makes clear the importance of personal responsibility, integrity, assuredness, and respect, illustrating how these principles help his students defy societal expectations and become the rule for positive, powerful change.

The Stories They Hear: Expecting Greatness as the Key to Success by Dr. William Keyes IV is an extraordinary testament to the rise and sustainability of his work and the power of storytelling and personal commitment in shaping success. Dr. Keyes writes with what can be best described as an authoritative, conversational style that is engaging and filled with personal anecdotes, effectively illustrating how detailed, real stories over generic responses can elevate crucial qualities like integrity and perseverance. Dr Keyes’ own path, from aspiring football coach to White House policy advisor and successful life insurance sales, serves as proof of the impact of hard work and dedication. As a parent shepherding a strong woman of color through her final year of university, I am absolutely committed to using areas I missed from his approach in shaping those who follow. The standout examples for me are scholars Christopher McKee and Christopher Elders, where Dr. Keyes reinforces how persistence, faith, and the support of others will open heavier doors. Overall, this is a thoughtful, eye-opening memoir and a great read. Very highly recommended.
