Unlike many other zombie apocalypse stories that keep the ghouls coming, The Survivors Book II: Autumn by V.L. Dreyer deals with the survivors trying to pick up the pieces. After all, zombies are not the only problems this small group faces. Beginning with the death of Skylar’s baby and Sandy’s concern about her sister’s fragile state of mind, the residents of the motel face the threat of gangs, natural disasters, and their own weaknesses. Sandy is learning to take charge of the group as they look to her for advice and practical survival skills at the same time as she is falling in love with Mike. In spite of the horrors Sandy faced in the previous 10 years, she is willing to give love a chance and realizes how important it will be for the future – not only hers but for all of humanity. Working together with Mike, her sister Skylar and the Parata Tribe of Lake Ruatuna, Sandy develops a vision for a possible solution to the isolation and danger they all face. Will she be strong enough to accomplish what she sees or will the odds still be overwhelmingly against her?
More of a romance than a zombie story, The Survivors Book II: Autumn by V.L. Dreyer deals with Sandy’s ambition to be a whole person and a leader of her group. I really enjoyed the depth of emotion shown in Sandy's growth throughout the book. She is a great character and is living up to the position her friends seem to be putting her in. Sandy is a terrific female lead and although the interactions between her and Michael seem immature at times, it is important to realize that they have never been involved in relationships before. The depth of maturity they do express in their serious conversations and the way they handle communication issues is well worth reading. Their active love life is portrayed with feeling without being terribly explicit. This is a great look at the will to survive in the post-apocalyptic world amidst hardships and happiness.
