The Swim: A Story About Friendship and the Longest Swim in the World by Jens F. Colting is a beautiful story of friendship between Goliath and Tiny, a shy boy, who become friends after meeting at the community swimming pool. Goliath is wheelchair bound and that particular day his swimming class has been canceled. Tiny is a giant of a boy, even though he is only fourteen, and is strong and big. Once they meet and get to know each other, Goliath and Tiny become great friends. When Dr. Gupta tells them that Goliath’s health is slowly deteriorating, it is a hard pill for Susy, his mother, to swallow. Tiny is worried why nobody can fix Goliath. Tiny devises a plan to swim across the Atlantic Ocean while Goliath, Susy, and Kurt will follow him on a boat. Dr. Gupta also thinks the ocean air will be good for Goliath. Will they make it across the Atlantic Ocean?

This story has lots of adventure, and readers will be on the high seas along with Tiny, Goliath, and the others, battling storms, braving the elements, sea sickness, rogue waves, and sea predators and monsters. The descriptive narration brings the story alive and makes the swim across the Atlantic Ocean, the adventure, and the characters tangible to young readers. All the characters are strongly portrayed and they will leave an impact on readers for a long time. As the title suggests, this story of the longest swim and friendship is heartwarming and will pull in young readers with its themes.
