The Tarot Cards: Major Arcana is the first book of a new series by Christina Maharaj. Clara had no idea that she had magical powers until she finds the tarot card that transports her to another world. To claim her title as the new master of the cards, she must first retrieve the remaining major arcana tarot cards that are scattered throughout the land and are only accessible by completing certain tasks. Clara meets up with Alex, a magical talking tiger who, oddly enough, reminds Clara of her best friend who went missing several years ago. The two of them set off together to find all of the cards so that Clara may gather enough magic to return to her home. Meanwhile, the magical world is in danger, and Clara and Alex may be the ones who have to save it.
With an easy-to-follow writing style and the introduction of a new tarot card for each chapter, Major Arcana is a quick read that is hard to put down. Christina Maharaj has woven spiritual and mystical elements into a fictional story that teenagers and teenagers-at-heart are sure to enjoy. Those with experience and prior knowledge of tarot cards will find this book especially enjoyable. The interpretation of the cards, with the added illustrations of each card and how they connect to the story, was equally entertaining. The characters and the surprises that Clara encounters on her journey are also unpredictable and interesting. I look forward to reading more in The Tarot Cards series.
