The Tavern Prince by James Robin Peoples follows Nathan, an indentured servant who is recruited by the king’s guard after his unique skills catch the attention of the captain. One cold, snowy night, a lieutenant is sent to bring him in, revealing that his abilities are far beyond what they expected. The task to rescue a girl from Lord Darkmoore’s castle becomes more complicated when she is revealed to be Princess Leena, who is tied to a prophecy with the power to shape the kingdom’s future. At the same time, a former royal agent thought dead reappears, and a mysterious group of assassins from a haunted island pursues Nathan for their own purposes. “We... are now staring out upon Lord Darkmoore’s battlefield... we have discovered our new ally. One which we are sworn to defend and have been waiting to arrive for about a thousand years.”
The Tavern Prince by James Robin Peoples is a wonderfully written story set in a world that has been meticulously built and is defined by ritual and history. I love the introduction to the mythos of Koinín, alternate systems for measuring time, and regency laws, conveyed with an ease that makes even unfamiliar customs feel grounded. The supernatural appears not as spectacle, but as belief shaped by real events, military campaigns, political decisions, and the passage of stories across generations. I think the greatest testament to the author's skill is in the effective use of dramatic irony, and readers learn who Nathan is and what others have long known, right alongside him. The reveals accumulate slowly, even when we see the truth in plain sight. Overall, this is a story worth the time investment. Very highly recommended.
