I Am Legend meets Army of the Dead in Dave Godwin’s Tetrad Variant. It all begins with a virus—the benign Sleeper Virus attaches itself to cells throughout each host and is able to destroy nearly any foreign bacterial or viral invader. But then came the Tetrad Variant, a demonic curse that kills those it infects and reanimate their bodies into modern-day vampires. The more the undead feed, the more aware they become. College friends Alex and Raul are trapped in a carnage zone and must team up for a perilous escape. They must reach Raul’s friend, Ella, and join her military squad. Will they ever get to a safe zone? They are alive, and living is the best thing they could hope for in a world dominated by the dead.

I don’t always read horror novels, but given the mainstream popularity of the vampire and zombie genre in both films and books, I find that The Tetrad Variant has plenty to offer in terms of frightening moments. The idea of a virus or bacteria that spreads to infect humans and turns them into vampires had been proposed back in Richard Matheson’s 1950s novel. Dave Godwin’s story, however, differs in the sense that it has two college friends who are teaming up to escape from the carnage and to join other survivors to increase their odds of surviving. It doesn’t stop at horror for it also has memorable moments that stem from character motivations, such as Ella’s determination to search for her sister. The Tetrad Variant is a well-constructed and nail-biting sci-fi thriller that is enough to terrify anyone who loves the genre.
