The Braided Prescription by Dr. Beth Ricanati shares the journey of the physician from stress-induced chest pain to wellness through the use of the ancient Jewish ritual of making challah. The author uses this ritual to teach invaluable practices for healing and well-being, bringing together the wisdom learned from global workshops and clinical practice. She summarizes it in seven practices, which include the art of acting with intention, stopping to breathe, embracing imperfection, acting authentically, daring to prepare, and engaging in positive social connection. This book braids together medical science and tactile spirituality to offer a challah-making ritual that becomes a recipe for evidence-based medicine for modern ailments.
I needed this book, and it opened my eyes in many ways. Dr. Beth Ricanati is a great writer and communicator, and I easily connected to her compassionate voice. In an age where loneliness is an epidemic and where people struggle with burnout, this book offers the perfect antidote. I was mostly touched by the author’s explanation of the “braided effect,” where small acts of making bread create a ripple that connects and heals communities and challenges the stress and chaos of our digital age. I learned that it is important to slow down, to gather intentionally, and to be deliberate in simple acts. The Braided Prescription is a book for anyone feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or burnt out; it is not just written for Jewish bakers but delivers universal practices that are tested across interfaith workshops and different communities. This book will help anyone learn the healthiest ways of connecting with themselves and with their community.
