The Tides That Bind is a story about family, specifically siblings Emily, Peter, and Cassie. Emily, a teacher, is the one who stayed close to home. So she knows what’s going on with her family's business, specifically, that it is on the edge of disaster. So she does what any good daughter would do; she rallies her siblings to help. Their father died recently, leaving their mom to run the pub on her own, and she needs help. With the official start of summer looming, the siblings had to decide quickly, if reluctantly, to come back to their hometown and save the family business. Katie Eagan Schenck has woven an entertaining tale of complicated family relationships, drama, and, of course, romance. Each of the siblings tries to do their part to save the business and the town, and in the process, they find something none of them were looking for.

The best part of the book is Emily, Cassie, and Peter. They are siblings, but they all have their own lives, and some, like Peter, are more reluctant to leave behind the life they have made for themselves to return home. It’s understandable, and I don’t hold it against him, but it did make the story far more interesting. The family dynamics keep the story moving forward, and Katie Eagan Schenck did a good job of fleshing out the characters and making them relatable. And more than that, she made the town itself feel like another character fighting for survival. The Tides That Bind: Heartstrings and Hops, Book 1, is an emotional story that’s definitely worth reading!
