Can you change the past? What would you do differently if you could redo your life? This is the major theme in The Timebreaker by Steven Cortinas. It’s 2029, and Jamie Harris and Sarah Salazar, both middle-aged women, have been through a lot in their lifetimes. Jamie, a disabled alcoholic, and Sarah, a disgraced lawyer and an ex-convict, were once best friends in their teenage years. Learning of an organization that can send minds to the past, they decide they have nothing left to lose but to go back to those teenage years to try to correct their mistakes and right their wrongs, regardless of the dangers involved. However, Father Time isn’t too happy with these disruptions, and Jamie and Sarah will have to race against time to fulfill their goals before it is too late.

Because of the futuristic and time-travel themes, it takes a while to understand the world in the story. However, once you do so, you’ll be hard-pressed to put it down as you follow 47-year-old Sarah back in her 17-year-old body. The Timebreaker by Steven Cortinas is one of those slow burners that reels you into its world before you even realize it! One of my favorite moments was seeing the time-traveling Sarah become aware of how she’d truly been in the past. I also enjoyed the many pop culture references, especially those from the 90s. The plot twist at the end leads to a cliffhanger that leaves you desperate to know how it’ll all end. I can’t wait to read the sequel!
