The Touchstones of Leadership: Essential Principles for Business Leaders by Joseph Carleone delivers forty-five flashes of wisdom for leaders who manage and managers who lead. Imagine that the best leadership advice you ever needed could fit on a single index card, and you already have an idea about what this book accomplishes. Veteran executive Joseph Carleone offers wisdom from five decades in defense, aerospace, and pharmaceutical manufacturing in this book, condensing his leadership insights and wisdom into forty-five crisp one-liners that were inspired in staff meetings, perfected in classrooms, and tried and tested in corporate turnarounds. These touchstones are organized around a four-part leadership model: managing oneself, interpersonal skills, managerial skills, and strategy and alignment. The author develops the idea that great leaders are “responsible realists” who know when to lead and how to manage in critical situations.
Joseph Carleone’s book offers the mentorship any aspiring leader would need and the wisdom and insights that ground the experience of seasoned leaders. This is one of the best mentorships you will receive. The Touchstones of Leadership are a compendium of well-explained aphorisms that build a coherent leadership philosophy: never mistake activity for achievement, focus on what you can control, and pursue excellence rather than glory. Such are the short, pithy highlights of the book. My biggest takeaways are the following: stop digging once you’re in a hole; feed opportunities and starve problems; treat your employees the same way you expect them to treat your customers. The delivery is excellent; the maxims are unforgettable, the anecdotes are authentic, and the framework is intuitive.
