The Transition by RJ Tomlin is a young adult science fiction story that crosses the line into dystopia that will appeal to both sets of readers. Rume lives in a community where he must wait until his 18th birthday to meet his parents. When he turns eighteen, he will take part in what is called the Transition and walk through the Ridge to join the rest of the adult world. He watched numerous people travel through the Ridge throughout his life, and disappear in a flash onto the other side. He's never doubted that this is the truth of his life.
But a few days before his own Transition, Rume is warned that the Transition might not be all that it seems to be. Where did this information come from? Why should Rume believe it? But if he doesn't take the information seriously, he may be opening himself up to an unexpected amount of danger as he plans for his own Transition. But if he doesn't adhere to his community's laws and participate in the transition, he might find himself in even more danger.
This is an interesting story that is more dystopian than science fiction. Readers of both genres will enjoy the interesting new world built here, especially the concept of the Transition. Young readers especially will appreciate the moral dilemma that Rume faces. Does he go along with what he has always been told, even if it might cause him harm? Or does he rebel and try to think for himself?
