The depths of the human mind are virtually unfathomable and the effort to uncover what makes people behave the way they do takes a toll on the mental health professional. Jillian Strask is a young psychologist who has foregone a ‘normal’ life in order to devote herself to her patients in The Twisted: Sane vs The Insane by Gary Turcotte. All but estranged from her family and alone with only a few colleagues to spend some time with, Jillian wonders about choosing a different path. The stories she hears and the situations she deals with are beginning to numb Jillian, causing her to lose her enthusiasm. Confronted by circumstances beyond her control, Jillian falls victim to those who believe she should be a miracle worker, the complexity of insurance regulations, and legal processes that seek to lay blame for someone else’s benefit. Jillian questions the place of religion in life and slowly comes to the realization that maybe there is something more than just the human will. Has she lost touch with her humanity or will she be able to reconnect with people on a more personal level?
Deeply moving, vivid stories of patient issues form the basis of The Twisted: Sane vs The Insane by Gary Turcotte. The viewpoint shifts, though, and the thoughts and feelings of the main character, Jillian Strask, dominate the action. In this excellent story, you feel first-hand the effects of everyone’s neediness on Jillian and are pulled along as she deals with her own personal issues. Amusing at times but thought-provoking throughout, The Twisted provides an intimate and illuminating look at both the strength and frailty of the human ego and its relation to faith and truth. Turcotte asks you to decide how fine the line is between the two conditions – sane or insane.
