The Wall Outside is a faithful, old school fantasy novel by James William Peercy, and the first book in the Xun Ove Series. Our central characters are Jonna and Stephanie, two young people who seem to be enjoying a typical fun vacation. Things take a sour turn when Jonna hits his head, believing that he’s imagined a whole new world of pixies and other fae folk. Jonna shakes off their ridiculous requests to become the savior of their land, thinking that he will simply return to his normal life. But when the hallucinated forest world turns out to be real, Jonna gets a nasty wake-up call. Stephanie is kidnapped, and Jonna must cross the barrier and fulfill his alleged destiny to get her back.
The Wall Outside is a straight-up, traditional fantasy novel, and that is by no means a bad thing. If you’re getting tired of gimmicks and twists in the new urban fantasy genre, then James William Peercy will deliver a story in the vein of fantasy masters like Tolkien and fairy tale kings like Hans Christian Anderson. Peercy’s world-building is richly convincing and he writes with concise flair, making The Wall Outside a delight to read, no matter the scene being played out. The originality of this book comes with Jonna, a true anti-hero, whose modern day sensibilities shine out against the old selfless ways of knights in armor. His devotion to Stephanie is his driving force and I was pleased to find that this rang true throughout the tale. Fantasy fans, this a new classic in the making.
