The White Apron by Christine Eyres is the story of Agnes as she goes through hell to live safely. Agnes Watt was not expecting life to hit her that hard. Everything changed after she married William Miller. Living in poverty proved to be more difficult than she ever thought it could be. Agnes had a family to feed and meet their needs. Amid the chaos, Agnes and her husband William fought for their right to live in the industrial revolution that shook Scotland to its core. Can Agnes build a more secure future for her family with such opinions and beliefs?
Such vivid descriptions! This audiobook gave me a full sensory experience like never before. I could feel the struggles and hardships Agnes had to go through, could feel the hunger and desperation she felt. The author did an incredible job of taking the reader into the heart of mid-19th century Scotland where the characters were. I could tell the author did massive amounts of research because it reflected in the descriptions. Agnes was the kind of protagonist that makes the reader feel lost in the story. I was sad when the novel ended, but there was a sense of relief and satisfaction too.
Narrator Cathleen McCarron made this story for me. Her speech was easy to understand, was melodic, and very interesting. Her diction of each word made the story special. She captured the essence of Agnes and brought her to life. She conveyed Agnes’s emotions well and allowed the listener to immerse themselves in the story. Excellent from every perspective. What a brilliant tale of survival!
