In her memoir The Woman on the Ferry: A Journey of 1,000 Miles to Redefine Success and Discover Joy, Brenda Uekert chronicles her transformative 1,000-mile hiking journey after leaving her business and rethinking her life. Through physical push on trails and multiple landscapes, Uekert finds herself up against personal setbacks, including health and family issues. As she hikes, she thinks on her evolving understanding of success, moving from career-driven goals to embracing authenticity and maturation. Throughout her journey, Uekert sees nature’s beauty and harshness in a way that mirrors herself. She redefines joy, learning that it arises not from worldly achievements but from embracing solitude, resiliency, and connection. Ultimately, Uekert’s journey leans into the importance of choosing one’s path and finding fulfillment in the process rather than the destination.

Brenda Uekert’s The Woman on the Ferry is a truly refreshing, inspiring memoir on choosing self-love and contentment through the act of hiking. Uekert’s writing is straightforward, clear, and accessible, and my ability to connect with her was almost immediate. As she traverses the miles, she takes us into both the big and small moments that brought meaning into her life. We see these in the quiet of a forest trail, the joy of ice cream after a long day, and the satisfaction of being alone with one’s thoughts. Uekert’s style feels like a quiet conversation with a friend, broken down by mile, location, date, and time, alongside what transpired and was resolved, or at least accepted, during that time. Her musings on stepping away from conventional paths to embrace a life more attuned to nature and personal desires are deeply moving. Overall, her book is a reminder of the power of nature to provide all we need for those willing to take the time to listen. Very highly recommended.
