The Write Way to Catch a Killer by Beth Prentice is the second book in the Murder by the Book Mysteries. It all starts with a cold case. One that never got solved, meaning a family never got answers and a killer that never got caught. Aubrey is a cozy mystery writer who thought the most she’d have to deal with was creating another masterpiece. But that changes when Detective Jacob Tate reveals an unfortunate truth: her sister Emily’s wreck wasn’t an accident. Turns out, her sister was murdered, and to make matters worse, the police have turned their attention to their brother Corey. Aubrey knows he wouldn’t do anything to hurt their sister, but how can she prove it? As she digs into her sister’s life, she uncovers shocking secrets. Teaming up with her best friend Spencer, she at least stands a chance at finding the real killer. But will she want to know the truth once it’s out?
The case is personal as it revolves around her sister’s wreck, which wasn’t an accident. This quickly makes the mystery pack more of a punch and weaves emotion into the story. The emotional toll deepens when Aubrey discovers secrets in her sister’s belongings. These lead her to wonder how well she actually knew her sister and if the secrets she had could have gotten her killed. Beth Prentice knows how to build family drama and make an impact. Her family dynamics are an important aspect of the story and build from book one, becoming more in-depth as the mystery unfolds. Plenty of romance woes also plague Aubrey’s life and balance the murder investigation. Her friendship with Spencer is rooted in a secret crush and is a sweet spot in the story that strikes an almost love-triangle contrast with the bickering interactions she has with Detective Tate. The Write Way to Catch a Killer proves Prentice knows exactly how to deliver drama, scandals, and secrets in a mystery that you don’t want to put down.
