The Wrong Shade of Yellow is a wonderful non-fiction travel story of Margaret Eleanor Leigh, who gives up the life she knows in New Zealand to travel by bike through Europe to get to Greece. Margaret describes in great detail all of her many adventures through Italy, France and Belgium, train rides, ferry rides and more, but mostly concentrating on her biking along the back roads. She sleeps in a tent as she stops in camping grounds; each one being an adventure in itself. Margaret meets many types of people - some very kind, some very mean - and a vicious pack of dogs before she finally settles in Methoni, Greece. Methoni is everything Margaret has dreamed of; a beautiful town with a lovely view of the water and castles to explore. She is anxious to rent an apartment and send for her mother, Polly.
I loved travelling along with Margaret and my legs got weary as I read of the hills and rough roads she had to travel. The Wrong Shade of Yellow was more than a travel monologue, it was a journey with a friend. Margaret shared her feelings, her thoughts, and beautifully described the passing scenery as well as writing vivid accounts of the characters she met. I felt the excitement as she entered Greece and longed to be biking beside her. The Wrong Shade of Yellow is a very quick and enjoyable read and I highly recommend it.
