The Year of Our Invasion by Margaret Pearce is an interesting science fiction story that starts with an invasion of Raven's village. The evil unleashed onto the village by the Black Duke only grows as his powers do. Raven is a herbalist and is forced to speak with a strange alien type of creature that is captured. Everyone else is afraid of the creature. Raven herself is afraid, but she must do as the Black Duke commands because he is in control of the village now. When Raven communicates with the alien species, she learns that the alien holds the power that could ultimately topple the Black Duke. Raven is now in a very tough position, but she knows what she has to do to overthrow the Black Duke and take back her freedom.

I liked the adventure element of this story. There was a lot of danger and fear and challenges, a welcome element of this story. You don't see that all of the time in science fiction stories, so it was a very nice surprise. I think other readers will appreciate that as well, and it may help draw readers from other genres to this story. In fact, this story had a real dystopian feel that I admired. The world building was done well and I liked learning about the town and the soldiers and surrounding forests.
