The Young Centurion by Cramer Louis Jackson is a literary fiction novel that takes place in ancient Rome. This is a book that would appeal most to a mixed audience of adults and young adults who enjoy historical fiction. Rome’s population is quickly growing and, with an increase in population, comes a need for more buildings as well as a need for more city paths. In order to fulfill this need, Caesar decides that a new bridge is needed, but first he must acquire the money to build it and the slave labor to do the building. Caesar decides to get both money and slaves through warring with other cities and plundering them for riches and slaves, but first there must be a “hero of Rome” for the people to unite behind. Who will rise up to become the hero of Rome?

The Young Centurion by Cramer Louis Jackson is a well-written book based on the historic period of ancient Rome. Cramer Louis Jackson did a spectacular job in creating his own fiction story while still making the story feel as if it could have really happened in Rome. I enjoyed the fact that the book was only sixty-six pages long as the author did not waste time with needless background information and instead dropped me right into the story itself. I liked the contrast offered by both Caesar and the hero of Rome as it provided a good perspective for what Rome was like for people of different classes. Overall, I found that I really enjoyed this book as it was an equal combination of interesting and thrilling; I hope that the author decides to write a follow up novel!
