The Young Mystery Series: The Missing Good Luck Charm by B. K. Maxwell is a children’s mystery that introduces readers to twins, Marcus and Kia. They attend Rydell Elementary School and have a club known as the Young Detective Agency. As the story begins, Kia, who also narrates, senses that things are off about this particular Monday. At school, the twins, along with their friends, are focused on getting to Rhonda Clemmons’ locker so that her prized charm can give them good luck. As the morning bell rings, a new kid, Cody Daniels, is introduced to the class, but Kia is suspicious of how easily he seems to fit in. Eventually, Kia and her friends learn that Cody helps his grandmother make and sell dreamcatchers on the weekends and that he has a special one he keeps in the locker. But it disappears, sending Kia and Marcus into detective mode to find out who is behind the missing dreamcatcher.
B.K. Maxwell kept The Missing Good Luck Charm straightforward. The pacing is very steady from beginning to end, easing young readers into the investigation behind the missing dreamcatcher. The layers unfold at the appropriate moments from their mishap in the school basement to figuring out who the blurry figure is on surveillance footage that Mr. Ferly shared with them. Readers also get a glimpse of their school day and what they are learning to prep for the MEAP Test. Their detective work and curiosity are even more interesting when their friends, Dennis, Kim, Nelson, and Samantha, tag along to help them solve the case. Readers are taught the importance of camaraderie through these friendships. Readers who appreciate a character-driven mystery for children will find it similar to A to Z Mysteries by Ron Roy or the Nate the Great series by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat.
