Then I Met You is a historical romance written by Deborah C. Wilding. It's set in Honolulu in 1941 in the months preceding the attack on Pearl Harbor. Merrylei Wentworth has come home again to handle estate affairs after the death of her father. Her mother had died years before, and she and her father had been estranged since that event. She's left her studies in Art History uncompleted, and has decided to turn the family's mansion into a guesthouse. There's a lot of restoration work necessary, as the premises have been vandalized extensively, and the tenant farmers on the grounds fear that the plans will involve their eviction from their homes, despite Merrylei's assurances to the contrary. She's living in the carriage house with her aunt and younger cousin, Johnny, while the renovations continue.
Deborah C. Wilding's historical novel, Then I Met You, is a compelling and suspenseful story that will resonate with romantics and historical fiction buffs alike. I particularly enjoy reading stories that have historical bases and was very impressed with the author's coverage of the impact of the attack on Pearl Harbor on the people living on the island. Merrylei's friendship and growing affection for the Japanese architect, Jamison Sumida, provides an enjoyable romantic tension, which is further complicated by the cultural mores of the time. While I've read other historically based accounts set in Hawaii during that time, I was pleased to find much in Then I Met You that I hadn't been aware of, especially the efforts made by the civilians to pitch in and help after the attack. Then I Met You is historical fiction that's as good as it gets, and it's most highly recommended.
