The dangers, failings, fun, and just plain weird events in online dating are all covered in this book. Catherine R Berra recounts not only her experiences but those of friends, both men and women, on occasions when they have met a prospective partner after connecting on the internet. Many of the dates are first time only since the behavior of new acquaintances was enough to discourage her and many others from dating a second time. As she says, she is “not a quitter” and, despite a few breaks to recover her equilibrium, she tries yet again on a variety of sites to find the perfect partner. He doesn’t have to be perfect, but maybe normal, mature, thoughtful, a gentleman, clean and tidy, and above all fetish-free. The list of improbable situations, bizarre encounters, and incredible behavior by those posting on the dating sites is, quite frankly, unbelievable, which explains the title of the book: These Stories Are True” – I S#!+ You Not!
It's not often I laugh out loud when reading a book, but These Stories Are True by Catherine R Berra, recounting her experiences on meetings from online dating sites, had the tears rolling down my cheeks. I have to believe her, but are there so many weird people wandering around unsupervised? What makes it even worse is that these possible marriage material candidates are middle-aged, as is the author, but behave as if they were wild college kids. To be fair, there are stories about some of the deranged women who have dated, so it’s not just the male species who are somewhat unstable. Apart from being a fun read, which will have you laughing until it hurts, this book is a must-read for anyone who is about to join an online dating service. The red flags are all there; you will know what to look for to give yourself the chance to bail out early. I’m still shaking my head at the antics described in these pages, and while it was a great read, it’s worrying there are so many crazy people out there ‘looking for…?’ I wish the author every success with her book and her future endeavors.
