In Thomas and the Butterfly, written by Jessica Azenberg and illustrated by Li Liu, Thomas the kitten lives with his mother and grandmother. One autumn morning, Thomas invites his grandmother to play, but she is too ill and must rest. Later, his mother takes her to the doctor, and, soon after, Thomas learns that his grandmother has passed away. Feeling sad, Thomas is comforted by his mother, who explains that love can be found in nature, like in the trees, waves, and stars. As time passes, Thomas still suffers from his loss. One day, he spots a butterfly, which dances around him. Thomas feels a connection to the butterfly, imagining it as a sign of his grandmother's love. The butterfly brings him comfort and hope as he begins to move beyond his grief.

Thomas and the Butterfly by Jessica Azenberg is a comforting story for young readers and a wonderful way to present loss in an age-appropriate, understandable context. Azenberg’s writing beautifully conveys the depth of Thomas’s sadness while offering hope, reminding readers that love never truly fades and can be found in nature’s wonders. The message that loved ones remain with us in spirit is gently imparted through the comforting words of Thomas’s mother. Li Liu’s illustrations are a beautiful enhancement of the story, shining in a classical, hand-drawn, and painted style that brings the story to life. The colors shift from somber to vibrant as Thomas begins to find joy again, reinforcing the uplifting theme of renewal and connection. Overall, this is a lovely and heartfelt little book that offers reassurance to both children and adults. Very highly recommended.
