"Thorns of Roses" by Randy Rawls is a fast pace thriller that reminded me a lot of the movie 'Death Wish'. The story revolves around Private Investigator Tom Jeffries, a former Dallas police officer and an ex Special Forces Green Beret. When the stepdaughter of Charlie Rogers, his former commanding officer, is raped and murdered it brings back memories of what happened to his sister years earlier in the same situation. Now he is out for revenge. As he tracks down the members of the Thorns on Roses gang, Charlie tries to talk him out of it. If that isn’t bad enough the attorney’s office where he works occasionally has sent a woman, Abby, to watch him and report back. All though they did not say it outright, she was actually sent to spy. As the chase heats up and the gang is eliminated one by one, the heat is also becoming apparent between Tom and Abby. As the police get loose, can Tom finish off the gang before they get to them or will he succumb to the gang or will he also be captured by the police as a vigilante?
This book will grab the reader from the first page as the mystery unravels through the pages. The main characters, Tom Abby and Charlie, were very easy to become connected with and the secondary characters lend credence to the book. The book contains violence that would be natural to the situations at the time, but there is really no coarse language and only hints at sexual interaction. As the readers go along on a wild ride with Tom Jeffries they will find the book very hard to put down. With a thrilling conclusion that I was not expecting I found this book to be an exciting read. For all who like a good suspenseful thrilling mystery I think "Thorns on Roses" is a great read.
