‘Til Health Do Us Part is an inspirational story about the healing power of taking responsibility. Julie Rooney is a woman who once believed that unconditional love meant sacrificing herself, her health and her happiness to those she loved. The lessons she learned on the path to healing helped her to understand the role she played in becoming and staying ill. The book documents Julie’s experiences of chronic disease and how hitting rock bottom left her with no place to go but back up again. Like a beacon of light for lost sailors, ‘Til Health Do Us Part offers hope for others who are suffering from emotional malnutrition and shows that it is possible to heal when accepting responsibility for their own happiness.
While I was reading Julie Rooney’s book, I found myself repeatedly thinking of how courageous she must be to reach out to others by making her own life story public knowledge. On the heels of that thought came the realization that a person can only be brave when facing fear and face it she did. Head-on. In ‘Til Health Do Us Part, Julie Rooney addresses the negative impact of letting yourself be guided by others, instead of looking towards yourself for guidance. I was inspired by Julie’s incredible will to survive and her stamina to keep going no matter what the process of healing threw at her – the mark of a true hero. Not only does ‘Til Death Do Us Part draw the reader in through the emotional intensity it contains, but it also transforms the otherwise weighty matter of ill health into unlikely entertainment. I found that the character duo of Julie and Xavier made me laugh with their quirky one-liners and spirited comebacks. If you know someone who has been through the life-altering effects of chronic illness, definitely recommend this book as a guide to what comes after!
