The Mori family’s book, Tiny Backyard Discoveries: Explore Nature, is part of a series of encyclopedias. It’s a lovely read for the curious-minded nature lover, and is packed with stunning pictures personally captured by the family. Each page is full of information about the smallest creatures. Readers learn about the terms used in the book, such as the different categories of species. They also learn specific facts about each creature, such as where they live, what they eat, and their conservation status. Pro tips and fun facts are also included. A sidebar on each creature’s page includes an illustration of their size, their diet, and whether they are active at night or in the daytime. A photo of the family and each member’s part in the book is a heart-warming touch at the end.
The Mori family’s encyclopedia is a delight to read. I loved the aesthetically pleasing and easy-to-follow format. Not only that, but the number of facts I learned for the first time is impressive. I have to say, the fun facts were my favourite part of Tiny Backyard Discoveries. It’s a perfect resource for children and adults alike and would be a great addition to an elementary school teacher’s classroom library. While most encyclopedias are huge, this one is relatively compact. Don’t let the size discourage you. It’s full of value. In fact, this is the first encyclopedia I have read through entirely. I enjoyed every minute of it and highly recommend this book. It won’t disappoint.
