Toast with a Side of Dragon: Harry's Dragon Tales is a delightful story by Lisa Reinicke. My seven-year-old daughter read it to me, and she was delighted to discover a character she likes in Harry, the little hairy troll who lives alone — and the lonely part of his life is well communicated in the story — and who has a penchant for eggs. He lives in a cave snuggled into the hillside by a small town in Norway. When he finds an egg, he is happy, believing that his day will become complete. Then on his return from his morning activities, he hears a peck-peck sound and to his utter surprise, the egg has hatched into a little dragon. And life won't be the same for Harry. As he slowly grows to accept Piff, the dragon, a new form of excitement and adventure enters his life.
Lisa Reinicke has crafted a delightful story that will entertain both young and adult readers. It is a story that is emotionally rich and the author does a wonderful job in the character curve. The troll is a character that many readers can relate to, someone with a strict routine in life, and who finds it hard to accept change. And that is why he feels uncomfortable when he can't have his egg. The writing is beautiful and filled with strong imagery. It isn't hard to imagine the elements of the setting, like the cave and its surroundings. The adventures of Harry and Piff are deftly described. Toast with a Side of Dragon: Harry's Dragon Tales is a beautiful and very engaging story that will transport young readers; very imaginative, deft, and balanced.
