Have you ever wondered why zebras have black and white stripes? Did you know that each zebra’s striped pattern is different from the next zebra? And that their unique coloring is a type of camouflage. Jere Silber’s Together shares a lot of interesting fun facts about the different animals and insects that live on this planet. The author has arranged the story alphabetically, beginning with one of the tiniest, but most industrious creatures, the ant. The selection of creatures is as unique as the creatures themselves. The author even includes a mythical animal, the unicorn, with some interesting facts to entertain the young mind. I think my favorite creature in this book is the peacock. I hadn’t realized that a group of peacocks isn’t called a flock, but rather a party. And what a party a group of peacocks can be with their loud voices and beautiful display of feathers.

Jere Silber’s picture book, Together, is an engaging and informative rhyming alphabet book that educates as well as entertains young readers. The author’s big challenge is quoted at the beginning and the end of the book: “Insects and animals from A to Z that can all live together in harmony, so my question to you is why can’t we?” This should open up some serious conversations between young readers and their educators and caregivers. The language is simple and each creature featured includes a bright, colorful illustration by Sonia Merkel as well as some interesting and fun facts. What a great way to work on alphabet skills and learn about animals and insects, too!
