In Emily Camp’s book, Torn, the main characters, Sierra and Luke, struggle to rekindle a relationship torn apart by Luke’s father four years earlier. Their interest in each other rekindles when Sierra reappears in Luke’s life, burdened with marital issues and a three-year-old child in tow. The relationship begins slowly, each confident they can ‘just be friends.' But the attraction becomes too strong, and they find themselves reigniting the passion they once shared. Then difficulties arise when Sierra’s estranged husband, Trevor, appears and threatens to overturn Sierra’s newly happy love life. Sierra and Luke find they are torn between their feelings for each other and what they know is the right thing to do.

The strength of Torn lies in Emily Camp’s ability to capture the complexities of managing a relationship, from the thrill of first love to the enduring issues and frustrations of marriage. She accomplishes this through strong, independent characterization and the effective use of dialogue. Angst among her characters is depicted through a series of escalating conflicts between Sierra, Luke, and her husband. Yet the author effectively depicts Sierra as a sympathetic character who is forced to balance her desires with the needs of her child and Trevor. This is helped along by including humorous moments each time Sierra and her young daughter interact. These situations are so well-scripted that I found myself laughing aloud at the back-and-forth between them. Emily Camp writes solid characters and great dialogue, resulting in a compelling story.
