It’s just before World War II in Massachusetts, and there’s something evil going on at Howling Manor. Dr. Volkov—“Call me Dr. V"— and his two minions are experimenting on children, injecting them with wolfbane in the hopes of creating were-volks. However, the tests aren’t going well. On one fateful night, an FBI agent, a Russian secret agent, a Ninja, a German policeman, and an Australian bounty hunter all converge on the manor (unbeknownst to each other) to either steal the formula for themselves or arrest or kill Dr. V. It’s a jam-packed night. Do any of them make it out alive? Does Dr. V get his just deserts? You’ll have to read Trapped! by Richard D. Bailey to find out.
There was a lot to love about this book. First, as a fellow Australian, I adored the character of Diane Dare the most; her perfect Aussie slang made me laugh loudly. Next, as almost all the story’s action happens in one night, it makes for a quick and easy read. I really liked how Richard D. Bailey managed to include the title word 'Trapped!' in every chapter. I also loved the chapters' cute headings hinting at what was to come. In every way, Trapped! aims to please, from its violent beginning to its satisfying end. Lovers of action/horror will appreciate this book as much as I did. However, due to its setting in 1937, there are some racist and sexist statements, and while they’re legitimate for the period, they might trigger some readers.
