Echoes of the Forgotten Relics by J. Whitaker follows Gildan, a young hunter from the quiet village of Raven, who has always felt destined for something beyond the ordinary life his father expects him to live. After experiencing a haunting dream that urges him to travel to Elderth, Gildan finds himself torn between family duty and a mysterious calling he cannot ignore. Along the way, Roderic, a clever thief surviving in the corrupt city of Garthen, finds his life is also disrupted by an eerily similar vision. As both men struggle with their own personal battles, a larger mystery surrounding the ancient relics and forgotten legends unfolds. A destiny appears to connect strangers from vastly different backgrounds.
I really enjoyed Echoes of the Forgotten Relics by J. Whitaker, especially as someone who loves fantasy. It has a very familiar "ordinary people called to something greater" feeling, but it still manages to carve out its own identity through the atmosphere and steady storytelling. The world-building was one of my favorite parts because it feels rich without drowning the reader in endless exposition. Every town, forest, and kingdom has its own history, and I found myself wanting to learn more about the world beyond the pages. Gildan was an easy character to root for because his conflict between responsibility and ambition felt believable, while Roderic quickly became another standout thanks to his wit and morally gray personality. Watching their stories slowly unfold kept me invested. The pacing is definitely more deliberate than action-heavy, and each chapter added another layer to the larger story. As the first installment in a series, it does an excellent job of introducing the characters, laying the groundwork for future books, and leaving me excited to see where the Relic Bourne Saga goes next.
