Travels in Time: Alexander the Great in Pergamon is a children’s book by Mary Black. Alex and his friends discover their time machine is missing. Clues send the children and Ariadne, an archaeologist, to the legendary Black Alley in Thessaloniki and its gateway opens into another dimension. They find the time machine in there, but it unexpectedly transports them to Macedonia, where they meet King Phillip II, his son, Alexander the Great, and Aristotle. The information given by the time travellers amazes Aristotle and Alexander, especially when told of their future accomplishments and fame, as recorded in history. Aristotle asks if they can take him to see the future Pergamon library, but the children are anxious to return home before the time machine malfunctions again. Unfortunately, devious Ariadne deliberately programs the time machine to grant Aristotle his request, much to their regret.
Travels in Time: Alexander the Great in Pergamon is from an educational series by Mary Black. Children will enjoy the enlightening historical tale that takes them on a journey into the past using a time machine. Mary Black is creative and writes in a format that will attract children to her stories. Her characters are well developed and realistic for the eras where they come from. Learning about Alexander the Great and Aristotle is very fascinating. This book is not as adventurous as Travels in Time: Minoan Crete, which I have read, but there is more historical information that the author included through the engaging dialogues between all the characters.
