Brooke Taylor’s Twist My Heart is a romance novel featuring Nikolas Steele, a retired SEAL, who spotted a blonde girl fueling her vehicle while he was at a gas station. She rebuked his attempt to hook up with a sassy remark. He felt the need to follow her. Nikolas encountered a major tornado and found the blonde woman outside her mangled truck. Nikolas revived her, but she couldn’t tell him who she was. She was adamant about not going to the hospital or speaking to the police, so Nikolas brings her along with him. When the blonde used the restroom, he watched a news report showing Thea Gale assaulting a humane society employee and stealing a dog from the quarantined animal room. Now understanding why she avoided the police, something tells him there was more to her story than what the media had revealed. Nikolas takes her to his home and researches her on the internet. What he discovers proves there is more to Thea than he had suspected. Why does he feel the need to help Thea?
Twist My Heart: Wicked Games Book 1 isn’t a typical romance novel. Brooke Taylor incorporated intriguing characters and a mysterious plot that drew me in. Thea’s amnesia was an odd feature because she only appeared to lose her identity. As Nikolas showed her various things, she could memorize every detail. I found it funny when he took her to a mall, and he refused to help her pick out jeans. When she approached another customer, her story of being an ex-Amish woman who cursed had me laughing out loud. The tension between Thea and Coop, Nikolas’ best friend, was brought to attention. I found Coop was difficult to get any emotion from, and Taylor wrote the story so I could experience Thea’s distrust of him. The seamless transitions between the characters aided in making the story flow well. The suspense and danger element made the plot unpredictable. Twist My Heart would appeal to adult readers who like a romance novel where there is an intense storyline.
