Kallie Collins is a veterinarian who has the ability to communicate with animals. This comes in handy when an injured pet is brought in for treatment and the source of the injury is a mystery. It’s also helpful if a pet (or pets) are the only witnesses to a crime – like murder. Two stray kittens hover in the shrubs near where a man is beaten to death. No one else witnessed the crime. Can Kallie get the kittens to communicate with her? And, if she does, will the local police enforcement believe her and her furry, four-legged witnesses.
Lisa Shay’s mystery novel, Undercover Kittens: A Kallie Collins Cozy Mystery, is the third book in her Pet Communicator Cozy Mystery series. Following the lead character from the previous books in the series, the author presents Kallie as an affectionate and caring veterinarian with a special talent for being able to communicate with her patients (and other animals she comes in contact with). The story is told in the first person from Kallie’s point of view. The plot develops with a brief introduction to Kallie and her clinic, complete with a first case that introduces her pet communicator talent. The murder becomes the mystery and the stray kittens are the key witnesses as Kallie attempts to convince the ill-tempered, unbelieving detective assigned to the case. It’s a battle of wills that pushes the story forward and intensifies the mystery. The book stands alone, but everyone enjoying this book will certainly want to read the earlier books in the series as well. A sweet, charming, full-of-love-for-animals, comfortable read.
