Unforgettable Roads by Jessica Schaub is a touching Christian fiction read. The story follows an aging man named Jack Elliott and tells of his endearing relationship with his granddaughter Alison. Jack has Alzheimer’s and uses journaling as a means of preserving and collecting his memories, wisdom and life lessons in order to pass them down to Alison (hoping she makes better choices than he has). Jack and Alison take a road trip and reminisce on Jack’s life, but things take a bad turn when Jack is injured and his journals are stolen. What will Alison do? Will she ever find the journals again or are her grandfather’s writings gone forever? And what happens when she goes looking for her grandfather’s first love (and it’s not her grandmother!)?
I thought Unforgettable Roads was a very introspective book. The story contains a great deal of insight in regards to family, relationships, faith and just life’s overall journey. I think readers will really connect with Alison (if they are younger) and Jack (if they’ve reached the older years). In this story, we see life from different perspectives, that of the young and of the old. I think younger readers will gain insight into why the wisdom of parents and grandparents is something special and should be heeded. Schaub does an excellent job weaving an encouraging Christian perspective throughout the story that will have readers reflecting on their own life choices. I would recommend Unforgettable Roads by Jessica Schaub to fans of Christian fiction, inspirational and motivational genres.
