Up Close And Personal is the story of Angie Fletcher and Jason MacDonald. She is a former farm girl with aspirations of being a big time news reporter and taking the world by storm with her understanding fiancé by her side. Jason is a reformed landscape architect who now is an urban gardener. He has no time for women obsessed with their careers — been there and done that —and now he just wants a simpler life. When Angie is assigned to cover a community garden project for her news station, both she and Jason learn the importance of not judging a book by its cover. Janet Wellington does a great job of creating relatable characters who aren’t simply caricatures. Angie has simple roots she is trying her best to hide and Jason is trying to hide his attraction to a woman who is everything he doesn’t want. It makes for an entertaining read.
There was so much to love about Up Close And Personal but the thing I both loved and appreciated is that author Janet Wellington didn’t give us that insta-love that can be overwrought. There was attraction, but even that took some time to build as Jason and Angie got to know one another. I loved Angie’s dad; he was funny and lovable and so down to earth that his scenes constantly brought a smile to my face. The earthy scenery and the sensuality of the flowers from Jason’s perspective blew me away yet put me right there under the warm sun. It was truly a privilege to watch Angie struggle to reconfigure her plans and watch as Jason began to heal from his own tragedy.
