“I’ve pushed so many frontiers in my life, I just want one more.” Perhaps that is not the noblest motivation out there, but for David Davis, the protagonist of the novel USS Primis: The First Starship by M.H. Altis, it may not even be true. The story is set in the near future, where humanity continues to indulge in one of its favorite pastimes: pushing itself to the brink of extinction. When the sun threatens to go nova billions of years ahead of schedule, thanks to human shenanigans, a desperate mission is launched to colonize a new world. That world is over 500 light-years away, and the crew of eleven will need over half a millennium to get there. It's a mission fraught with risk, the greatest of which comes not from the unforgiving environment of deep space but from a crew who may not be seeking a new future as much as trying to escape the past.
Don't be fooled by the generic-sounding title. USS Primis: The First Starship by M.H. Altis is a top-notch science fiction tale combined with a first-rate psychological thriller. The plot seamlessly morphs from survival of the species to survival on a different and more personal level, and the execution is outstanding and plausible. Numerous deep themes highlight the duality of humanity and show both the vileness of the species and its magnificence while reminding us that the boundary between the two is fragile. Realistic world-building and a pace akin to heart palpitations make this book a fast and captivating read that will please more than just fans of the genre.
