Vindictive Angel by Karen Black is a stunning psychological thriller. The lines between right and wrong are about to get seriously blurred. Julie Davenport works in the ER and has fixed up more children than she can remember, many of them torn apart by criminals. Her husband, Devin, is a homicide detective, and that means Julie has more than a basic understanding of how the justice system should work. Sometimes, though, criminals walk free, and someone needs to make sure justice is meted out. A vigilante is born who takes matters into her own hands, but her double life is about to come under the spotlight when Devin takes charge of a serial killer investigation. As questions are asked, Devin discovers something he’d rather not have known. But is the serial killer a hero or a criminal?
Vindictive Angel by Karen Black is a jaw-dropping thriller that, despite being short, packs in so much. The first chapter sets the scene for the whole book, drawing you in and written in a way that makes you want to keep reading. The chapters are divided between two perspectives—Julie and Devin—that neatly pull the story together into an ending that might surprise you. The characters are superbly developed, leaving you in no doubt who they are, and you won’t be able to help liking them and engaging with them 100%. The descriptive nature of the writing gives you a front-row seat to what unfolds in a twisty story that keeps you on your toes all the way through. This is a thoroughly enjoyable story that will make you think hard about the lines between justice and revenge.
