War of Mortal Gods by Kipjo K. Ewers kicks off with the growing conflict between Earth and the Dominion Council, triggered by the devastating attack on Alvion Prime. The Dominion blames humanity for the attack and plans a full-scale invasion of Earth. Prince Merc and Attea try to handle the situation, but they fail to capture the human responsible. Meanwhile, Sophia, recovering from poisoning, joins forces with an unexpected ally to uncover the truth, revealing a larger conspiracy. Horus, seeking ultimate control, uses the powerful energy source Ember to manipulate humanity and fuel his weapons. The EVOlution project works on developing advanced defense technology, including energy shields and solar flares to protect Earth. As war looms, factions battle for control, and Horus’s true intentions—seeking to enslave humanity via Aten and dominate the galaxy—make headway.
In War of Mortal Gods, Kipjo K. Ewers does a spectacular job of roping in readers. The premise is unique and Ewers' ambitious move to redefine the boundaries of sci-fi and fantasy storytelling pays off. As far as world-building goes, it is far beyond the classic gods vs mortal scheme. Ewers anchors the saga in a beautifully mixed bag of politicking and galactic war, with mythology and tech making it all work. Fleshing it out are the more micro issues like slavery, babies, human panic as an invasion is imminent, and family affairs, albeit highly dynastic. The House of Ra is the standout to me, with the House of Set a close second. My heart warmed when I discovered that Ewers gifted us with a fierce Captain Lizzo, but, alas, she's on the other team. The writing is sophisticated and the pacing is pitch-perfect. For readers looking for a fusion of cosmic warfare, mythological roots, and humanity on the rocks, this is your series. Very highly recommended.
